Doc Ardan (or probably more proper, Doctor Ardan or Doctor Francis Ardan, as it’s doubtful he was referred to as “Doc Ardan” in the original stories) appeared in a trio of French sf-adventure novels by Guy d’Armen: “The City of Gold and Lepers” (), “The Troglodytes of Mount Everest” () and “The Giants of Dark Lake.

This story, "Doc Ardan" City of Gold and Lepers" was written in France in It stars a young medical doctor, scientist and explorer, Dr. Francis Ardan, who deals with a threat in Tibet: a sinister asian Doctor Natas (Satan backwards), who has built a super-science city, then keeps the inhabitants in check with the threat of leprosy/5(5).

Francis Ardan is a medical man, scientist, explorer created by French writer Guy D'Armen and is very much in the Doc Savage tradition -- except that this book was written before the Doc Savage pulps.

Doc Ardan battles the evil Doctor Natas (Satan spelled backwards), an archetypal villain inspired by the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu. Finally. This book came out in France five years before the first Doc Savage novel was published. There's almost no way Lester Dent could have come across this. And yet Ardan (whose surname could be translated into English as "Savage") mirrors his American counterpart almost perfectly, down to having bronze skin and weirdly colored eyes, in this case.

Philip José Farmer utilized all three titles, at various times, while working on his fourth Nine book. However, THE MONSTER ON HOLD was the latest title, and the one under which he announced the book in Thus, it is only fitting that this Doc Caliban adventure will finally appear under the title best known to Farmer’s legions of fans.
